I had a similar thing happen to me when a guy ran a redlight from a cross street on my left and tried to turn into the lane I was traveling in. I swerved right to avoid him (barely), but he forced me over a curb and into a telephone pole. He almost came to a stop, then said screw it and took off. Piece of shit. He got away scott free and my cherry BMW was totalled. I would have been MUCH better off to have hit him, and he wouldn't have gotten away. I had 2 witnesses stop and give statements to the cops. I had their plate number, as did another witness. The plate came back to a different vehicle (the guy probably swapped plates with his other vehicle and was uninsured is my guess), and the cops wouldn't even go to the guy's house and confront him, or see if the other vehicle was registered to him as well.
